Escape from Los Angeles!

UCSB Graduate Student Years (1973-1977)

At the Santa Barbara Mission the year I began graduate school at UCSB, 1973.
1973-77 were my graduate school years at UCSB where I studied political theory and constitutional law.
At a Santa Barbara nightspot with my long-time friend Sara, fellow grad student Jeff, and his date, 1974.
Big hit movie in early 70s with tune to match: "Tubular Bells." -Got talked into modeling for this ad for the campus photo studio. The ad appeared in the campus newspaper and on a pink desk blotter (October 1974). The Grateful Dead appeared at UCSB several times in 1973-74 and I was there to soak up the sun and the tunes. "Come, hear Uncle John's band... ."

I rediscovered European movies during my grad school years and the six below became some of my favorites. Lina Wurtmuller (who directed the two movies on the right) was actually nominated for best director for Seven Beauties.

In Puerto Vallarta on vacation with parents when Nixon resigned, August 1974. Second trip to New York City, Christmas 1975. This is Times Square on Christmas Day.

Saw this movie in Philadelphia during its premier run in December 1975. It was a flop then.

Standing outside the UN building with Chrysler Building in background.

Confronting a "Moonie" at LAX  after getting in from NYC, New Year's Eve 1975.

Graduate degree ceremonies at UCSB, June 1978. Mother on left, grandmother on right, and Dr. Navarro in the middle and  below. Me and best bud Roy at Red Rock in Los Padres National Forest, Santa Barbara County, 1978.

Assistant Professor, University of Utah Years (1978-82)

I started teaching political science at the University of Utah winter quarter 1978. Escaped Utah in 1983.

Saw this movie in SLC in early 1978.

Joe on the front porch at 474 I St., SLC, UT. January 1978.

Roy in the back yard. My little red bug in the carport.
Spent the summer of 1978 in Isla Vista. Just vegging out.

The summer of 1978 I went to Mexico with my Grandmother. Left, my grandmother with people from the village where she was born (Chavinda, Michoacan).

Met good bud Ray while he was a Senior at BYU, 1978.
On a panel of political scientists at the University of Utah, 1979. Two colleagues who shall remain nameless on my left and some goober politico at the end. Left, at the pyramids outside of Mexico City.
Having dinner at an outdoor restaurant in Cuernavaca.

Me and fellow UCSB PhD graduate Laurie (still at the UofU) in my office at the "Hinkley Institute", 1979)

The little red flyer behind Laurie in the picture on left was for this class I taught. Did a post-doc at Stanford the summer of 1980. Hooked up with friends in San Francisco, June 1980.
My favorite religious order. San Francisco, 1980. One of my all-time favorite movies came out in 1979. I became a Raider fan in 1980. Unwavering  for 24 years!
It was bad enough this bozo was governor of California for 8 years. Now he wanted to be president!  Utah gave him 70% of the vote. I campaigned for Barry Commonor. One of Monty Python's best--a send of Christianity no less! Saw it in Salt Lake City in early 80s.
Return to Santa Barbara, 1983
Best buddy Phil (L) and his little brother Joel on a trip to Big Sur just before I started at UCSB, August 1983.

After leaving the University of Utah I got a job at my alma mater, UCSB, in 1983.

Had a mustache when I started my job at UCSB. This picture accompanied the article announcing my appointment as Director of Graduate Student Financial Support (1983-86).

One of 1984's fun movies.

In 1986 I became the Assistant Dean of Students; in 1995 the Associate Dean.

One of the best movies of 1988 by Martin Scorcese. Pissed off the right-wing Christians but if they truly smart they would have realized this movie was more ally than foe.
